APTA Recognizes Cincinnati Metro For Bus Safety
Metro honors safe employees and celebrates Safety Month in June CINCINNATI –Metro was recognized for its Pedestrian Safety Program with a Certificate of Merit from the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) at the 2011 Annual Bus Safety & Security Excellence Awards on May 22.Metro honors safe employees and celebrates Safety Month in June CINCINNATI –Metro was recognized for its Pedestrian Safety Program with a Certificate of Merit from the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) at the 2011 Annual Bus Safety & Security Excellence Awards on May 22. “The winning public transportation systems have exemplary programs that create and sustain exceptional workplace cultures of safety and security and add value to all of us in the bus transportation industry,” said APTA President William Millar. Metro celebrates safety every June. This year more than 450 bus operators and mechanics earned safety recognition, and were honored at Metro’s annual Safety Awards Luncheon on June 1. Overall, some of Metro’s safety accomplishments in 2010 include: A 10.3% reduction in preventable accidents (compared to 2009) Less than one preventable accident per 100,000 miles A 30% decrease in total lost time due to safety claims in Metro’s Maintenance department (compared to 2009) Reinstated safety audits in the Maintenance department Metro’s Safety Committee will be at Government Square’s Area D on Walnut Street, on June 29, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., for its Community Outreach Day. The committee, which includes bus drivers, maintenance, and administrative employees, will be there to answer questions from the public and to let passengers “see from the driver’s perspective” by sitting in the bus driver’s seat. Metro works with its drivers and mechanics throughout the year to ensure safety. Metro purchased a bus driving simulator in 2009 with federal formula funds from the Federal Transit Administration, to make training more efficient, enhance new operator preparation, improve safety performance, and reinforce driving competencies.
