FTA Awards Metro More Than $200,000 for Maintenance Training

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has awarded Metro a grant for $206,973 to develop a transit maintenance workforce training program.CINCINNATI – The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has awarded Metro a grant for $206,973 to develop a transit maintenance workforce training program. The program will provide technical training in the rapidly changing area of hybrid engine technology, as well as continuing education for current members of its transit workforce. SORTA was one of 17 organizations in 12 states selected to receive funds through the FTA’s FY2012 Innovative Transit Workforce Grants Program. A total of $7 million in grants was awarded nationwide. The program, now in its second year, helps local public transit agencies and institutions of higher education to conduct training, assistance, and outreach aimed at bringing more women, minorities, and minority-owned businesses into the transportation field and creating new opportunities for employment. “A well-trained workforce is the key to excellent service on the street,” said Terry Garcia Crews, Metro’s CEO & General Manager. “This funding from the Federal Transit Administration for workforce training will help us maintain advanced technology as our fleet goes greener.” Metro is a non-profit, tax-funded public service of the Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority, providing about 17 million rides per year. Metro provides fixed-route and paratransit services in Greater Cincinnati. # # #
