Metro Provides Gas Price Alternative on Dump the Pump Day

As gas prices in Cincinnati climb to near-record levels, Metro will participate in the eighth annual National Dump the Pump Day on Thursday, June 20.CINCINNATI – As gas prices in Cincinnati climb to near-record levels, Metro announced that it will join with other public transportation systems nationwide to participate in the eighth annual National Dump the Pump Day on Thursday, June 20. Sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) and supported by organizations including the Sierra Club, the 2013 National Dump the Pump Day encourages people to ride public transportation and save money, instead of driving a car. While gas prices hover near $4 a gallon, Cincinnati Metro fares are as low as $1.75 one-way and unlimited-ride monthly passes begin at just $70. Cincinnati residents who pledge to Dump the Pump on Metro’s Facebook page before June 20 can enter to win a 30-day rolling pass. “It’s exciting that we continue to see transit ridership increase in the Cincinnati area, as well as across the state,” said Ben Wickizer, Conservation Coordinator for the Ohio Sierra Club. “Offering robust transit service is critical for our economy, environment, and health, and Cincinnati Metro’s service is providing these benefits to the community.” According to the latest APTA Transit Savings Report, individuals in a two-person household in Cincinnati can save an average of approximately $7,000 annually by downsizing to one car. Bus riders can view fuel savings using Metro’s online calculator at http://www.go-metro.com/calculator. Metro is a tax-supported public service of the Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority, providing about 17 million rides per year in Greater Cincinnati. # # #
