Homeless Resources for Families with Children

Families comprise 40% of the homeless population. Children in these families typically change schools 7 to 8 times per year, significantly disrupting their peer relationships and education. There are several programs in Hamilton County using a single gateway specifically focusing on the provision of housing support to homeless families with children.

Individuals and families in Hamilton County who are currently experiencing homelessness, or who are at risk of becoming homeless, should contact 513-381-SAFE, which serves as a central access point for referrals and triage. This phone line is open 9 AM to 5 PM Monday through Friday, and 10 AM to 2 PM on Saturday and Sunday. The program also has an online referral form for advocates to use when unsheltered individuals or families do not have a phone or do not have consistent access to a phone.

Triage services are provided by several community partners which can help address additional needs individuals and families may have, such as food, clothing, and transportation, as well as provide information and resource navigation services.

Cincinnati Public Schools provides one of these programs, called “Project Connect” which works with several local agencies to help connect students and families experiencing homelessness with resources to address basic needs.

Project Connect can additionally help families answer questions about dispute resolution, transportation services, school supplies, enrollment process, housing resources, and enrichment programs. Families may visit the Project Connect Resource Center, located at 2120 Vine Street, which is open Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 3 PM.  Walk-ins are welcome. The office phone number is 513-363-6570.

Cincinnati Public Schools provides an online application for these services, and a downloadable flyer, which can be dispersed to parents, to provide guidance and answer common questions about education rights and free services about which to inquire.

Project Connect also serves as an information resource for homeless liaisons working in Butler, Clermont, Hamilton and Warren Counties. Homeless Liaisons are school staff members responsible for identifying students experiencing homelessness, ensuring school enrollment and attendance, and providing opportunities for academic success. You can learn more about the Project Connect program on the Cincinnati Public Schools website.

Project Connect is also available to conduct consultations regarding the implementation of the program in surrounding districts. You can call 513-363-6570 to arrange a session or request a complete list of homeless liaisons.
