SNAP Emergency Allotments Ending

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides nutrition benefits to supplement the food budget of needy families. The eligibility requirements depend on family size and income level. The benefit provides an E B T card that can be used at participating grocery stores to purchase foodstuffs only. This “grocery budget” is loaded onto the E B T card at the beginning of each month.

During the pandemic, the food allowance for SNAP recipients was increased, whereby additional funds were loaded at the end of each month. The amount of the extra assistance varied depending on household size and income. This extra amount was referred to as the “Emergency Allotment”.

This week SNAP recipients were notified by text message that the Emergency Allotment will end after February 2023. There will be no change to the normal allotment that occurs at the beginning of the month, but the amount received at the end of the month will no longer occur.
